10/16/2023 0 Comments Vmware player network cable unplugged![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() I have been able to cause the process to crash intermittently on the VMs, but only because my testing has exposed a bug in VMware networking. The problem occurs when the system thinks the device is up and functioning.and it isn't. In this scenario, I can't get my program to crash because our system recognized the interface as shut down and does the appropriate things. For a number of reasons, this is very inconvenient for me and I would like to do it here using VMs.Īpparently the system is recognizing the disconnection of the network device as some legitimate action and is appropriately stopping it, as far as the system is concerned. I do not wish to remove the host only network or anything like that, I just want to interrupt the data flow from outside the virtual machine in a fashion that would be considered abnormal in an attempt to get this thing to crash.Īnyone have any ideas how I might do that? If I really have to, I can set up on physical devices and test that way. To do this, I have to simulate unplugging a network cable. So, I am trying to duplicate the condition in my virtual network. The tech is never supposed to do this, but you know how it goes when you sell this stuff out into the field. We have established that this process crashes - sometimes - when a technician in the field abruptly unplugs a cable from our device. This, however, is a bandaid and I am trying to find the solution. We've put a watchdog monitor on that process and, when it dies, we restart it. Now, in the field, we have a problem with deployed systems where one side of the link abruptly crashes. I have two virtual machines here that are based on OpenSUSE 11.2 distros, heavily modified (including kernel mods) that talk to each other over a host-only network via a proprietary protocol. If it works without issue from a Linux Live OS CD/DVD/USB Flash Drive then the issue is in the software layer of the target system and will need to be further diagnosed/troubleshot or worst case scenario the OS reinstalled. We can visualize a virtual machine as having a virtual ethernet cable connected to a virtual router within the VMware framework. ![]() tar download on a USB Flash Drive and boot the target computer and test its Internet/Network Connectivity. So if you don't already have a Linux Live OS CD/DVD handy then download and burn the. One distro I like to have handy is Slax as it is a relatively small download. I'd test this by using a Linux Live OS CD/DVD/USB Flash Drive and boot the Physical Computer with this. While the hardware may indeed be okay nonetheless IMO testing the Hardware independent of the installed OS is the first stop on the diagnostic tree and a Linux Live CD/DVD/USB Flash Drive is one of the best/easiest ways to quickly test. Since you said " Every other computer (12 total) on the network is working fine." I'm assuming that is in the same context as the problematic system in that all other computer also have VMware Player installed? The first thing I do is test the hardware independent of the Host OS to determine that the Ethernet Controller is indeed good and that the problem truly lies at the Host OS/Application Layer. ![]()
